Mike Huckabee wrote about being energy indepenent tonight on his blog:
Our nation has a long history of meeting challenges on issues of national importance. We are currently facing another one of those great challenges: our dependence on foreign oil and its impact on our national security and financial well-being. I believe we must, and will, become energy independent within 10 years.
Yes, this is going to be a tough challenge. But as we have done in the past, I believe the American “can do” spirit will propel us to success.
There are so many examples of the American “can do” approach. Let me just cite three stories in particular that should inspire us to tackle this challenge in front of us with confidence and expectation of success:
Prior to World War II, American industry built a mere 61 four-engine bombers a year; however, by 1944 we turned out 16,344. American workers and industry teamed up together in the defense of our nation to make the impossible a reality.
In 1942, the U.S. Army set up the “Manhattan Engineer Project” to produce an atom bomb in a race to beat Hitler’s Nazi scientists. A mere three years later, America had successfully developed and tested its first nuclear device, which brought us to final victory in World War II during the summer of 1945. Once again, at a time when our nation’s security was threatened, America’s workers, scientists, and industries teamed up to beat the odds and defeat our fascist enemies .
\Then finally, on May 25, 1961, when President John F. Kennedy proposed going to the moon by the end of the decade, many doubted America’s ability to do so. The Russians were far ahead on the technological advances necessary to accomplish such a mission. Nevertheless , Americans buckled down and on July 20, 1969, we succeeded as Neil Armstong stepped out on the moon and planted the American flag in lunar soil.
