THIS IS AN URGENT MEMO TO EVERYONE WHO LIVES IN THE 2ND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF NEW HAMPSHIRE - VOTE BOB CLEGG FOR CONGRESS!!!  

Dear Friends,

The final day leading up to the Republican Primary is upon us, and your help is greatly needed. Whether it's a monetary donation to help with our Get-Out-The-Vote Program or whether you canvolunteer on election day, it's all much appreciated.

I have enjoyed traveling the 2nd Congressional District, going from town to town and listening to  what you want from your Congressman. Paul Hodes has failed us miserably and I am ready to take him on in the general election. I have made it very clear that the New Hampshire values that I've worked to protect at the statehouse -- limited government, low taxes, second amendment and the sanctity of life -- are the same values I will work to protect and promote in Washington. I'll also bring a whole lot of common sense!

Your support is crucial in making sure that we have the chance to take on Paul Hodes in November. I am asking that you go to your polling location tomorrow, Tuesday September 9, and vote for me. I want to go to Washington to serve you and bring our New Hampshire values to Capitol Hill and your vote tomorrow will go a long way in making sure that this happens. And while you are at it, take a friend with you!

VIDEO: Governor Sarah Palin VP Acceptance Speech

The highlight of Wednesday night, and definitely the entire convention itself, was the VP Acceptance speech made by Alaska's Governor, Sarah Palin.  Just watch it and my thoughts will be below:  






What an amazing speech!  I loved every minute of it.  However there was one moment where Governor Palin touched me emotionally and won my heart.  for those of you who do not know I am legally blind (among many other birth defects that I consider blessings) and face many challenges every day.  My Mom also is the Secretary for a local private school for children with special needs.  I spend a lot of time volunteering there and the students mean a lot to me because I share a kindred spirit with them.    


Governor Palin's 5th son was born with Down's Syndrome.  About 9 minutes into the speech she introduced her son and sent a message to families of children with special needs, "If elected you will have a friend and advocate in the White House!"  At that moment I lost it.  Tears welled up in my eyes and fell like rain.  It meant so much for me to hear those words and I know that they meant so much to my mom, and every parent involved with the school that means so much to me.  The rest of the speech was icing on the cake.  i can't help but feel that Governor Palin's speech that night will go down as one of the most historic speeches given in our nation's history!  

VIDEO: Mike Huckabee's Speech To The RNC

One of the most anticipated moments of the RNC Convention for me was the address by Former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee!  I was not disappointed. He wowed the crowd with his humor and wit and fired them up.  I liked how he used the part from his stump speeches about the school desks and related it to John McCain's service in Vietnam.  However my favorite quite from the convention was given during this speech

I'm not a Republican because I grew up rich. I am a Republican because I didn't want to spend the rest of my life poor waiting for the Government to rescue me!

For those of you new to the ballgame you must realize that Mike Huckabee was the least wealthy candidate running for President.  His net worth was about $75,000  Even the third-tier candidates had more money than Mike Huckabee to start with because they were sitting Governors, Senators, and Congressmen.  When he threw his hat in the ring he hadn't been Governor of Arkansas for a whole year.  He had take time off from the trail several times to make paid speeches so that he could pay his family's bills.

VIDEO: Michael Steele Addresses RNC Convention

By far the most awesome night of the RNC Convention was the packed star-studded Wednesday night.  The main program was kicked off by one of the rising stars of the Republican Party, former Maryland Lt. Governor, Michael Steele.  In a very bad year for Republicans, Steele almost stole a Senate seat from the Democrats and was a story during 2006's election night for about an hour as his support was much higher than expected.  Compared to other speeches Wednesday night, this one was short and sweet.  However it is clear that the purpose was to get the crowd fired up and he did!  

VIDEO: Compare/Contrast Joe Lieberman & Zell Miller

As in 2004, the 2008 RNC Convention featured an address by a Democrat.  In 2004 that address was given by the fiery former Governor of Georgia, Zell Miller (a speech that was actually the keynote address).  Last week, an address was given by the now-Independent Senator Joe Lieberman.  You can't help but notice the differences between the two speeches and I will compare/contrast them after you watch them below.  


First is Zell Miller's keynote address from 2004 (in three parts):  














And now here is the Address given on Tuesday night by Joe Lieberman of Connecticut:  






While Joe Lieberman is now an Independent (because he was defeated in the Democratic primary in 2006 and had to win as on) both of these speakers are Democrats.  At the time they spoke they were/are Senators.  However that is where the similarities stop.  


Zell Miller's speech in 2004 was fiery!  The speech by "Give 'Em Hell Zell" was most-likely the speech everyone remembers from that convention.  He tore his party and their nominee to ribbons. This was his swan song.  Before this speech he had made it clear he was a lame-duck and would not seek re-election when his term ran out.  He also wrote a book and after finishing his term he retired to his residence in Young Harris, GA.  He has rarely been seen or heard from since.  


Meanwhile Joe Lieberman has four years left of his term.  While Democrats are probably just as mad at him speaking at the RNC, as they were at Zell Miller, Joe's speech was very tepid in comparison.  He made it clear he was a Democrat and didn't criticize his party at all.  He didn't even harshly bash Barack Obama either.  However while Zell Miller ended his career making his RNC address, this address by Joe Lieberman may end his.    

VIDEO - Fred Thompson's Speech At The RNC

The highlight of Tuesday night was the speech by former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson.  He definitely stole the show.  Big congratulations to all the Fredheads out there.  I think this is the best speech he has give, ever.  Where was this during the primaries?  If he made speeches like this he might have actually won some states.  


While many people told John McCain's story from Vietnam I don't think anyone did it as well (other than McCain himself) than Fred Thompson.

Our preference for John McCain's Vice President, Gov. Mike Huckabee was not selected!!!  We were disappointed, and could not figure out why John McCain didn't "get it",..."get" what things Mike would bring to the ticket.

But, after seeing and hearing Gov. Palin at the roll-out event in Dayton, Ohio, at the O'Fallon, MO rally, and last night at the RNC in MN, we know know that...John McCain made a great executive decision in picking Gov. Palin to be his Vice President!!!

Even Gov. Huckabee said the day following the announcement: 

"Sarah Palin is a pleasant surprise for those of us who had hoped that Senator McCain would pick a principled and authentic conservative pro-life leader.  Sarah Palin is both principled and authentic.  As a Governor, she also brings an important balance of understanding of the critical domestic issues that is needed and that the Democrats have ignored with their ticket.  Governor Palin is smart, authentic, tough, and a dynamic choice that will remind women that they are not welcome on the Democrat's ticket, but they do have a place with us Republicans."

Trucker Randy, Huckabee Grassroots Coalition Founder added:

"I hope Gov. Palin gives John McCain a personal tour of ANWR, and shows him the real place that they want to drill for oil,..and that hopefully influences John to change his position on drilling for oil there!!!  If John does, the energy debate is over with Obama's position,...it's CHECKMATE!!!  Also, I'm so glad that the women of our country who are the foundations of our families,...now have a real wife and mother who they can relate to and support with their vote!!!"

RGeorge Dunn, Huckabee Grassroots Coalition Historian commented:  

"John McCain has done the right thing in appointing Sara Palin as the VP.  The unifying from choosing Sara has already brought the Huckabee Coalition Leaders forward enthusiasticly endorsing the McCain/Palin Candidacy including Dr. Dobson.  The greatest message that comes from picking Palin is Senator McCain's willingness to take on the Beltway elites and be a Maverick for the Constitution and the Tenth Amendment, teaming up with another Maverick.  Both are for doing what is right, not what is politically expedient.  We the people can look forward to a Federal Government that is going to have to behave it self, finally.  We can also expect that the Judicial appointments will be those of Good Behavior as clarified by Alexander Hamilton and demanded by the Constitution.  Our support and hopes for Mike Huckabee are still the focus for us and for another day.  Till then, we will stand up for this McCain/Palin Executive.  Though Governor Huckabee has said 'no' to a cabinet position, maybe the future President John McCain can persuade Mike to be the Secretary of State."

"I recall, last fall our conservative friend, Glen Williams from Alaska contacted me and wondered if there was anything I could do to get Governor Huckabee to come to Alaska.  At the time, I was working as a Regional Coordinator for Mike here in Iowa.  Glen told me a little about Sarah Palin (his Governor) and as I remember it.... said that she was a supporter of Huckabee and wanted to campaign with him in her state to generate more votes for Huckabee in the primary.  I sent several e-mails to the campaign and made some calls to this end.  At that time, Mike was extremely busy campaigning here in the main part of the nation.  As I remember it, Janet Huckabee ended up going to Alaska in place of Governor Huckabee.

He is a Saint Bernard breeder and specialist.  We have a Saint Bernard and we "met" through e-mail because of our dog, Harrison.  Glen is a Christian and a big Huckabee supporter.  Back at this time, I researched Sarah Palin because I had heard she had just given birth to a Down's Syndrome baby.  Since we have a Down's Syndrome daughter named Wendy (see www.chalkartist.com), we were automatically interested in her story.  I was impressed with what I learned about her but never really thought about her being an eventual VP pick."

Brian Donnegan, Huckabee Grassroots Coalition from GA:

"From our perspective we see Sarah Palin as one of us.  She is a member of the new breed of Republicans trying to take the party back from corrupt country-club conyism and handing it back to the people (as Reagan did).  Palin has fought corruption tooth and nail.  She has fought pork and tax increases in a big way in Alaska (against her own party).  She is also 100% Pro-Life and a proponent of off-shore drilling and fighting for our energy independence by any means necessary.  While it might not be Huck, McCain has made an awesome choice!"

Gary Glenn, Michigan American Family Association President, found Governor Palin an advocate for the family:

"As a candidate for governor, Sarah Palin rightly called the termination of prenatal life an 'atrocity,' supported a Marriage Protection Amendment to her state constitution, and said creationism should be taught alongside evolution in public schools. She's a former state champion and captain of her high school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a hockey mom of five children including an Army infantryman deploying to Iraq, and a gun-owning life member of the NRA.  And she's the only member of either party's ticket with executive experience in government.  As they get to know her, Gov. Palin will excite not only conservative Republicans who are less than enthusiastic about Sen. McCain, but American voters at large, and their election in November will obviously be a barrier-shattering even of historic proportions for women."

What A Week!

I don't know if there is a right word to describe how fantastic things went for the GOP during the past week/ten days.  I know I have not been as active as I should but I am sure other blogs out there have been giving you the news you need.  I am now going to pick through the best of the past week and present it to you with my analysis.  Stay tuned for a whole bunch of posts right after the other.  First up is a press release by the Huckabee Grassroots Coalition.  

Mike Huckabee's Speech is Tonight!!

Sorry I have been AWOL the past few days.  I have been busy trying to get my PC in shape to do my weekly radio shows again.  In the meantime I do want to make sure you do know that Governor Mike Huckabee will be speaking at the RNC Convention at 9:30 PM Eastern.  In fact the following is a message from the Governor himself:  

A quick email from the Republican National Convention.  I am scheduled to speak tonight at 8:30 PM Central time.  I hope you will watch.  Please spread the word to friends and family members who might also be interested.

I will be sharing the stage tonight with Governor Mitt Romney, Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Gov. Sarah Palin.  Senator McCain's selection of Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate has excited delegates and Republicans nationwide.  She is a great complement to Senator McCain.  On Sunday she, Senator McCain, Governor Romney and myself shared a stage in Missouri before a fantastic crowd of energized Republicans.

Standing against us, the Democrats are united behind Senators Obama and Biden.  Millions of dollars in negative attack ads are being spent nationwide against Republican candidates.  If you live in a swing state important to the presidential race or have a close House or Senate race being contested where you live, you have likely seen one of these attack ads.

There has been a lot going on over the past few days and I will try to give you a recap tomorrow.  Talk to y'all then.  

My Prayers Are With The Gulf Coast

For the past several days my attention has been focused on Hurricane Gustav.  It was really looking mean a few days ago.  At one point it was nearly a Cat 5 storm but that was about 48 hours ago.  I have been monitoring the storm by listening to WWL radio in New Orleans.  Right now it is barely a Cat 3 as the storm is poised to make landfall in Louisiana.  It does not appear that Gustav will be as bad as Katrina however no one should let their guard down because at one point during Katrina we did and it suddenly became a much worse situation.  

Big ups to all involved in prepping the Gulf Coast.  Preparations have been much more organized than they were just a few years ago.  Millions of people were evacuated out of the area in a very short time.   

As for the RNC Convention, activities have been scaled back except for those that are required by law to start the convention process.  All the speeches have been canceled today.  Everything else going forward depends on what happens on the Gulf Coast and how much damage is done.  Kudos t Senator McCain and the planning committee for staying on top of it and being very respectful.
